Field Hockey (Girls)

Dear MHS Field Hockey,

To say this has been an unusual year is an understatement!  We hope you and your families are doing well and staying safe.  As the MHS Field Hockey Board, we wanted to try and answer some of your questions for the coming year. As I am sure most of you have heard, we are excited to have a new FH Coach this year.  Fernanda Vinent is the Director of the Field Hockey Academy in the Woodlands.  Fernanda has played field hockey since the age of 7.  She played for the National Argentinian Team U-16 at the age of 15.  She has competed nationally and internationally in a sport she loves.  She is committed to the MHS field hockey program and looks forward to working with our girls.

As you would expect with a new coach, we will see some changes to the program. We will continue to welcome and encourage all level of athletes onto the team. With that said, we also want to become a competitive and respected team.  In order to achieve this we need more of a commitment out of our players.  The girls will need to be more respectful of the coach and her time committed to MFH.  Practices will be mandatory.  A player’s playing time on the field will be reflected by her attendance at practice as well as attitude and motivation.  The coach will discuss this more with the girls but we felt the returning players need to know that things will be a little different this year.  The coach will go into greater detail once she meets with the girls, but if you have any questions you are welcome to reach out to any of the board members listed below. Also at the end of this email is a note from the coach.

Meet the Coaches and our tryouts that were scheduled for May 16th and 17th have both been canceled.  After much thought, we have decided to forgo tryouts this year.  Those interested in playing next year can respond to this email with:

Players’ name
Player’s grade in Fall of 2020
Player’s email
Player’s cell number
Parent’s email
Parent’s cell number

Practices will start the week of  August 10th.  If you are interested in playing on the team your attendance will be MANDATORY for this week of practice.  We have games starting the first week of school and will have little time to prepare.  See below for clinic opportunities the week of August 3rd.

The fees for this next year will be $525 for returning members and $575 for new members.  The $50 difference is for the monogrammed FH backpack each new player receives.  Fees will be due in late August.  If you have questions about the fees please contact Kim Overall  - koverall@att.net

The list below highlights some of the changes for the coming season:

1.  The coach is offering  FREE CLINICS the week of August 3rd - 7th at Pech Field 9am - 11am.  While this is not mandatory this would be a great opportunity to meet the coach, work on your skills and get a head start on the season.

2.  We have added 2 Sundays a month for practices

3.  We are no longer offering Off Campus Health Fitness through field hockey.  I know this is a concern for some of you and you are welcome to reach out to Dayna Beardsley at daynatb@gmail.com for a better explanation

4. We will need more parent volunteers this season.  We are planning on lots of fun new things this year like team dinners, occasional special treats after practice etc.  We will be reaching out to you with various Sign Up genius opportunities.

We are looking forward to the coming season and hope you plan on being a part of it.  Please reach out to any of us if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Field Hockey Board

From Coach Fernanda to the players:

There is nothing more comforting than feeling that you gave it your all on the field.  It doesn’t matter if you won or lost.  You just gave your best.  As a player, I have experienced this feeling many times.  Now as a coach I plan to teach my players the importance of committing to yourself and the team.

My promise to the team is that I will try to achieve the maximum potential in each of you.  Practices will be technical, dynamic and demanding but at the same time very fun.  My goal is to build a group of friends whose ties continue when the field hockey season is over.

What do I expect from you:

  • respect for me and your companions
  • attendance to all practices (absence must be justified)
  • punctuality to practices and games
  • attitude to learn and grow as a player and as a person
