SUZANNE SCOTT -- DIRECTOR OF BANDS

Suzanne Scott joined the Band staff at Memorial High School as the Assistant Band Director in 2013 and was promoted to Director of Bands in 2016. Before coming to Memorial High School, Ms. Scott taught for nine years at various schools including Stratford High School, Chisholm Trail Middle School in Round Rock, and Pearland Junior High School South.  She received a Bachelor of Music degree from Sam Houston State University in 2002 and a Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University in 2006. While in college, she was an active horn player in many university ensembles including the SHSU Wind Ensemble, SHSU Symphony Orchestra, SHSU Bearkat Marching Band, FSU Wind Orchestra, FSU Chamber Winds, FSU Symphony Orchestra, and FSU Marching Chiefs.  Ms. Scott is an avid DCI fan and performed with the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps for three years.  She currently plays horn with the Sugar Land Winds and mellophone with the Houston Texans pep band, Deep Steel Thunder.  She enjoys spending time with her cats (Sebastian, Kia, and Snickerdoodle) and her adorable puppy, Princess Buttercup.

JEFF MUNGER -- ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BANDS

Jeff Munger became the Assistant Band Director for the Mustang Band in 2017.  He has been teaching in Spring Branch ISD since 2009, at Spring Woods Middle School for two years and Spring Woods High School for six years.  He also taught previously at Langham Creek High School in Cy-Fair I.S.D.  Mr. Munger’s primary instrument is percussion and he specializes in marching percussion, four mallet marimba, and drumset.  Mr. Munger graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.  He also holds a Master’s degree in Music performance from the University of Houston.  While at the University of Houston, Mr. Munger was the Principal percussionist for the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and performed on tour at PASIC with the U of H percussion ensemble.  He has received numerous awards including the Martha and Perry Brittain Scholarship for Jazz Studies at SFA and the Victor Gonzalez Memorial Percussion Award from U of H.  Mr. Munger currently adjudicates for the Cypress Fairbanks I.S.D. Solo and Ensemble Contest each year and surrounding percussion regions. His music affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Percussive Arts Society.  In his spare time, Mr. Munger enjoys spending time with his wife, Meredith, and his two sons, Jeffrey and Jackson.  His hobbies include a wide range of things from restoring classic trucks, to camping, hunting, and playing jazz and Caribbean steel band music.

JULIANAH IWELU -- ​COLOR GUARD INSTRUCTOR

Julianah Iwelu, known as Miss J, has been the Color Guard Instructor for Memorial High School since 2016. Previously, she taught at Lehman High school in Kyle, Texas as the Color Guard Technician. Miss J graduated from Texas State University where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. While attending Texas State, she was a part of the Bobcat Marching Band for three years and served as Color Guard Captain during her junior year. While in college,  Miss J also performed with an independent winter guard team called Identity for two years. During her color guard career, she received five TCGC State Championship titles, seven WGI Regional titles, along with multiple TCGC and TECA competition placements. She is also a 2012 WGI World Championships Scholastic A 2nd place titlist and a 2013 WGI World Championships Independent A 15th place titlist. Miss J enjoys traveling and exploring the world with her family and friends. She also enjoys partaking in various crafting and DIY projects.

DAVID LERNER -- PERCUSSION INSTRUCTOR

David Lerner began playing drums professionally at fourteen years of age and began teaching his first drum lessons at eighteen. His high school indoor-drumline won the Texas 5A state competition two years in a row and came in second his senior year. While always making music, he worked full-time jobs in several other industries while putting himself through school. Then in 2008 with the market crash eliminating his recruiting job, he decided to launch fully into a music career and has been happily teaching and playing for the past twelve years. He has been mentored by other great drummers and percussionists including: Brian Callahan, Joel Fulgham, and Ed Sophe. In Houston, he is one of the top-called drummers for musical theatre, gone on two tours with a celtic rock band, created a music learning storybook app, Music Tales, for young learners, and currently teaches at Memorial High School, St. Francis Episcopal, and The Kinkaid School.
